Short answer: most camera systems disappoint their owners for the same reason. The cameras were placed where mounting was easy rather than where identification is possible. Resolution, lens choice, mounting height and lighting matter more than camera count, and a four-camera system designed around those things beats a twelve-camera system that was not.

This is the concept that changes how people place cameras, and almost nobody hears it before they buy.
Those require very different amounts of detail on the subject. A camera that comfortably detects a person crossing a driveway at fifty feet will not identify that person, no matter how many megapixels the box advertised, because the pixels are spread across too wide a scene. The fix is not a better camera, it is a narrower field of view aimed at a place people have to pass through.
This is why we design around choke points. Front door, side gate, driveway entrance, garage service door, stairwell. One camera aimed tightly at a doorway is worth several aimed generally at a yard.

For commercial buildings and clubs, add points of sale, back-of-house doors, delivery areas, and any place where cash, keys or inventory changes hands.
Yes, and it is where cheap systems fail most visibly. Two things drive it.
First, infrared versus low light color. Infrared illumination gives you a monochrome image and works in total darkness, but it also washes out anything close to the lens and reflects hard off nearby surfaces, glass and rain. Cameras with genuinely good low-light color sensors keep clothing and vehicle color at night, which is often what actually matters in a report.
Second, the light you already have. A camera pointed into a porch light or a streetlight will silhouette everyone who walks under it. Sometimes the right answer is moving a fixture rather than buying a better camera. We look at the site after dark for exactly this reason.
Three practical options, and the right one depends on the property.
Local recorder. A network video recorder on site, with drives sized for the retention you want. No subscription, footage stays in the building, and it keeps working when the internet does not. The tradeoff is that a recorder in an accessible location can be taken, which is why we put them somewhere considered.
Cloud. Simple, offsite by definition, and easy to share. The tradeoffs are ongoing cost, upload bandwidth consumption, and reliance on your connection staying up.
Both. For most homes and small commercial sites we recommend local recording with selective cloud backup of specific events. You get full-resolution continuous history on site and an offsite copy of the clips that matter.
On retention: think about how long it takes you to notice something. Fourteen days covers a normal week plus a vacation gap. Thirty days is a common comfortable target. Retention is a storage math problem, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than accepting a default.
More than people expect. Continuous recording from several high-resolution cameras generates constant traffic, and if the cameras share a flat network with everything else in the house, video calls and streaming feel it.
The right build uses proper cabling to each camera with power over ethernet, a switch sized for the load, and camera traffic separated from general household traffic. Wireless cameras have their place for a single spot where cable is genuinely impossible, but a wireless camera is a camera that stops working when the signal does, and outdoor wireless in a neighborhood full of competing networks is not a reliable foundation.
If a home already has lighting control, a video intercom or an automation system, the camera system should live inside it rather than beside it. That means a doorbell press that puts the camera on the nearest touchscreen or television, exterior lighting that responds to a driveway event after dark, and one app rather than four.
Integration is also where most retrofits get expensive, so it is worth naming the goal early even if some pieces come later. Running the right cable during one project is cheap. Opening walls twice is not.
How many cameras do I need? For a typical Noblesville home, four to eight covers the meaningful approaches well. The number matters far less than the placement, and we would rather install four cameras that identify people than ten that only detect them.
Can you work with cameras I already own? Often yes, if they use standard protocols. We will tell you honestly which existing cameras are worth keeping and which are limiting the system.
Will I get alerts for every passing car? Not if the system is configured properly. Modern cameras support zones and object classification, so you can be notified about a person at the front door without being notified about traffic on the street. Tuning that is part of the install, not an afterthought.
Can I view the cameras when I am away? Yes, on phone, tablet or laptop, with user accounts so household members or staff see only what you want them to see.
