Family-owned AV integration for Greater Indianapolis, residential and commercial. Noble A-V leadership reviews every project before a single wire is pulled.
A smart home system isn't like a streaming subscription you cancel in a month. The platform you choose, and the company that installs it, will shape how every light, lock, shade, speaker, and screen in your home behaves for years. Homeowners in Indianapolis, Carmel, Noblesville, and Fishers are investing seriously in their homes, and that makes the platform decision worth getting right the first time.
At Noble A-V, we've been designing and installing smart home systems across Hamilton County and the greater Indianapolis area for more than 16 years. We install Control4 as our primary platform, and we're transparent about why, but we'll also walk you through what the alternatives offer so you can make an informed call.
Control4 is a professional-grade home automation platform designed to be installed and programmed by trained dealers, not self-configured from a phone app. That distinction matters more than it sounds.
No platform is right for every project. Here's an honest look at what else is out there.
Savant is the other major professional-grade platform and Control4's closest competitor. It's strong on media and luxury residential projects. The interface is polished, and it has deep Apple ecosystem integration. The tradeoff: Savant's dealer network is smaller, and the system can cost more to program and service. For homeowners who are fully in the Apple ecosystem and prioritize visual design in the interface, it's worth a conversation. For most of our clients in the Indianapolis market, Control4 delivers equivalent performance with a larger local support base.
Crestron is the enterprise standard. You'll find it in corporate boardrooms, luxury hotels, and high-end estates. It is extremely capable and extremely expensive, both to purchase and to program. Unless your project genuinely requires Crestron-level complexity (very large estate, commercial facility, or broadcast environment), the cost-to-benefit ratio rarely makes sense for residential work.
Josh.ai is a voice control layer, not a full platform. It integrates on top of Control4 or Savant and adds a privacy-focused, natural-language voice interface. We can add Josh.ai to a Control4 system for clients who want hands-free control without routing everything through Alexa or Google. It's a complement, not a replacement.
These platforms are approachable and inexpensive, and that's also their ceiling. They work well for renters or small apartments where you want some basic smart device control. For a home where you're investing in whole-house lighting, distributed audio, a dedicated home theater, and motorized shading, consumer platforms hit their limits fast. They depend heavily on the cloud, have inconsistent device compatibility, and lack the programming depth to create the kind of automation scenes that make a smart home genuinely useful rather than gimmicky.
The honest answer is that platform selection should follow your project scope, not the other way around. When Karl Krohn reviews a project at Noble A-V, the first questions aren't about brand preference. They're about how you actually live in your home, what problems you want to solve, and what your home's infrastructure can support.
